Types of Mold Testing We Offer

Air Sampling for Mold

Air sampling is performed to determine whether elevated levels of airborne mold spores are present in your home or business. This is typically done by collecting indoor air samples and comparing them to outdoor “control” samples taken at the same time.

Under normal conditions, the concentration of mold spores indoors should be lower than or at least comparable to the outdoor environment. A significantly higher indoor spore count may indicate a hidden moisture or mold issue.

It’s important to note that there are no universally accepted standards for safe indoor mold levels. This is why the interpretation of mold test results relies heavily on the experience and training of the inspector.

At Trademark Inspection Services, we combine professional air sampling with a thorough visual inspection of your property to determine whether a mold problem exists and recommend the next steps.

Surface Sampling for Mold

Surface sampling is typically performed when visible mold is present or when a suspicious substance needs to be confirmed as mold. This type of testing helps identify the species of mold growing on surfaces inside a home or business.

There are two common methods of surface sampling:

  • Tape Lift Sampling: A clear adhesive tape (bio-tape) is gently pressed onto the affected area and then sealed for analysis.
  • Swab Sampling: A sterile swab is rolled across the suspect surface and placed into a preservation gel for laboratory testing.

Both methods should be conducted by a trained and certified mold inspector, as each technique has limitations and may not detect airborne contamination or hidden growth. A thorough visual inspection is essential to determine the appropriate sampling strategy.

Once collected, all surface samples are sent to a certified laboratory for analysis, where the presence and type of mold can be confirmed with accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mold Inspections

How do I know if I need a mold inspection?

You may need a mold inspection if you notice musty odors, visible growth, recent water damage, or health symptoms like allergies or respiratory issues.

Are your mold inspectors certified?

Yes. Our inspectors are certified by the National Association of Mold Professionals (NAMP) and the International Association of Certified Indoor Air Consultants (IAC2).

What does a mold inspection include?

Our inspections include a thorough visual assessment and air or surface sampling sent to a certified laboratory for analysis.

Do you provide mold remediation services?

No. As an independent third party, we do not perform remediation. We provide unbiased assessments and recommend using a qualified mold remediation specialist.

How long does it take to get results?

Lab results are typically returned within 1–2 business days after the samples are collected. We’ll provide a detailed report as soon as they’re available.

What types of mold do you test for?

Our lab analysis identifies various mold types, including Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Stachybotrys (black mold), and others commonly found in Michigan homes and businesses.

Can I be present during the inspection?

Yes. You're welcome to attend the inspection, ask questions, and review findings directly with your inspector.

How is mold testing different from a general home inspection?

While a home inspection gives a broad overview of the property’s condition, mold testing specifically targets microbial growth and airborne spore levels. It’s a focused service that includes lab testing and specialized certifications.

All inspectors at Trademark Inspection Services hold certifications from the most recognized organizations in the field and are dedicated to ongoing education, ensuring that every inspection is completed to the highest standard.
