Radon Testing

Radon is invisible, and testing is the only way to find it

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, and colorless gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in the soil. While it might sound harmless, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Radon gas can seep into your home through cracks in the foundation, walls, or even through well water, putting you and your family at risk.

January Wrap-Up: Protect Your Home During National Radon Action Month

The good news is that radon exposure is preventable, and the first step is simple: testing. Radon levels can vary greatly from one home to another, so even if your neighbor’s home tested low, your home could have higher levels. Winter is actually the ideal time for testing because homes are more likely to be sealed tightly, making it easier to detect radon levels accurately.

At Trademark Inspection Services, we provide professional radon testing to help you identify if your home is at risk. Our tests are reliable, and can give you the peace of mind you need.

If your test results reveal elevated radon levels (4 pCi/L or higher), don’t panic. Radon mitigation systems are highly effective at reducing radon to safe levels. A mitigation system works by venting radon gas out of your home before it has a chance to accumulate.

While National Radon Action Month serves as a timely reminder to test your home, radon awareness shouldn’t stop in January. Here are a few ways to keep radon safety on your radar:

Questions we are asked

  • What radon level is considered too high?

The EPA sets its action level at 4 pCi/L. At or above that, mitigation is recommended. Below it, radon is still present — there is no level considered entirely risk-free — but 4 pCi/L is the figure action is measured against.

  • How does radon get into a house?

It forms as uranium breaks down in the soil and enters through cracks in the foundation and walls, gaps around service pipes, and in some cases through well water. That is why two houses on the same street can test very differently.

  • What happens if my test comes back high?

A mitigation system vents the gas out of the home before it can accumulate. These systems are well established and effective. We test and report the result — we do not sell mitigation, so there is nothing riding on the number.

  • Can I use a DIY radon kit instead?

You can, and a hardware-store kit is better than not testing. For a real estate transaction most parties want a test placed and retrieved under controlled conditions, because the result has to stand up to the other side of the deal.
