What actually blocks a kitchen drain

Pouring grease and oil down the drain might be harmless in liquid form. However, once the grease and oil cool down, it solidifies and can coat the inside of the pipes. This can trap food and cause large blockages over time.

Your garbage can is the best place to properly dispose of cooking grease, oil, and fat. Contain the grease or oil to a sealed object, like a zipper-storage bag and simply place it into your trashcan to avoid causing clogs.

Avoid the temptation of rinsing your coffee grounds in the sink after brewing a fresh pot. The tiny particles accumulate over time and form sludge in your pipes. This sludge is a common reason for clogged pipes and large blockages.

The best place to dispose of coffee grounds is the garbage can, however, they are also compostable.

If your sink does become clogged, you can purchase some drain-opener from the store. You can also create your own using basic household items. A mix of baking soda, vinegar, and some hot water is known to help unclog drains.

Questions we are asked

  • Is it safe to pour grease down the drain with hot water?

No. The hot water only carries it further along before it cools and sets, which moves the blockage somewhere harder to reach.

  • My drains keep backing up — is it the sink or the sewer?

If several fixtures are slow, the main line is the more likely cause. A sewer scope puts a camera down it and shows you rather than guessing.
